2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe priced from $37,995

Cadillac has released pricing details on its new-for-2014 ATS Coupe. The new model, which will be available with buyer's choice of a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6 (the ATS Sedan's base 2.5 won't be making the trip) can be had with optional all-wheel-drive in place of the standard rear-wheel setup, while customers can also snag a six-speed manual or six-speed auto.

Prices start at $37,995, which represents a $2,900 premium over the 2014 ATS Sedan (pricing on the 2015 four-door isn't available yet) with the same 2.0-liter engine. Still, the ATS Coupe starts at just over $2,500 less than a base BMW 428i, which is also less powerful and offers less standard equipment. The Caddy is also less costly than the Mercedes-Benz C250 Coupe, although only by about $200. It's even cheaper than the Audi A5, which starts at $38,105, but that model includes all-wheel drive as standard. It should be noted that these prices are without their respective destination charges (*$995 for the Caddy, $925 each for the BMW and the Mercedes and $895 for the Audi).

Unfortunately, Cadillac hasn't released any additional pricing information beyond what we have here, so we can't tell you how much things like all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission or the 321-horsepower V6 will cost. That makes it difficult to figure out just how reasonable the ATS Coupe will be relative to its challengers, but so far, the value equation looks to be in the car's favor. Cadillac dealers get $5,000 incentive for ELR test drives

The 530 Cadillac dealers - out of 940 total dealers - that signed on to sell the brand's ELR for $75,000 or lease it for $699 per month have managed to move 247 of them in the last five months. That's a little less than two cars for each dealer more than two dealers for each car if you need help with the math. With inventories of the luxury plug-in hybrid building up - Automotive News reports a 725-day supply - General Motors has created the Demonstrator Allowance Program to billow the sails on that slow moving ship, giving dealers $5,000 to promote ELR test drives.

A dealer with one ELR in its test fleet that racks up 750 test driven miles between May 1 and June 2 earns the fifty Benjamins, a dealer with two ELRs in the test fleet will get one hundred Benjamins. That will be added to summer incentives for dealers that pay $2,000 for units sold in July and $1,000 for units sold in August, while on the customer side, Cadillac has put "customer discount certificates" worth $3,000 on the hood for buyers and lessees.

Cadillac suggests this is about raising awareness of the ELR, but the question is how much dealers will be able to do for a car that observers - and buyers, apparently - still consider highly overpriced.

Is Cadillac working on an ELR-V? [w/video]

Could it be? Could Cadillac be working on an even higher-end version of its ELR plug-in hybrid? Well, General Motors' Executive Vice President Mark Reuss has gone on record as... well, not saying much. The exec was more than a bit coy on video (which you can view below) when asked about the idea of an ELR-V, although he did say that Cadillac was looking at "expanding the tuning envelope" for its plug-in coupe. What that means could be hinted at in these spy photos.

Cadillac is certainly up to something with this little red ELR. As is often the case, it's the car's enhanced brakes that give it away. Bigger binders are a telltale sign of sportier aspirations, and it's safe to say that rule applies with the ELR. The larger rotors and four-piston Brembo calipers are sourced from the Buick Regal GS, which we imagine would be plenty to bring the high-priced hybrid to a halt.

Obscuring those rotors and calipers are larger, double-armed five-spoke wheels. And, according to our spies, hiding behind that camouflage is a new grille. Outside of those two items, though, there's not much aesthetic change.

Perhaps the biggest hint that Cadillac is looking at a more potent ELR is the vehicle this car was being tested with - a Tesla Model S. The poster-child for the EV movement is a known performer, so it'd make sense that Cadillac is benchmarking this car against it.

Despite these bits of evidence, though, we're still far from convinced. Building an ELR-V seems to go against everything Cadillac is trying to do with both the ELR and the V range. Instead, we're betting this will become a VSport, following in the footsteps of the new CTS VSport.

That could explain the new brakes as well as the aesthetic changes, but not necessarily the Model S being tested alongside it - we suppose it's possible that GM could add a bit of grunt to the ELR's powertrain.

Cadillac bids farewell to CTS-V Coupe with special edition

With the introduction of the latest Cadillac CTS, we knew it would only be a matter of time before a new CTS-V would come along. Now General Motors has revealed that the next CTS-V will arrive sometime next year, but before it does, the company is sending off the outgoing coupe with a special edition.

For 2015, the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe will come in a limited edition of 500 units decked out with a dark grille treatment, satin-finish wheels, red brake calipers and an upgraded cabin. The interior is decked out Recaro seats trimmed in black with red stitching, Midnight Sapele wood trim, metal pedals and a microsuede-trimmed steering wheel and shifter.

Buyers will be able to opt for white, gray or optional black exterior paint, an available sunroof and a six-speed transmission in either manual or automatic configuration. Of course, the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 comes standard with 556 horsepower, as does Magnetic Ride Control and brakes by Brembo.

GM offers employee pricing to owners of recalled vehicles

Owners affected by the General Motors ignition switch recall are getting even an better incentive to return to its brands for their next new car. The automaker says that these drivers can now get employee pricing on its models. Previously, GM was only offering them a $500 discount if they bought a new 2013 to 2015 vehicle.

According to GM spokesperson Jim Cain speaking to Autoblog, the company has been offering the incentive to affected owners for about a month. But it purposefully isn't advertising it or disclosing volumes. "We want to give dealers as many tools as they need to satisfy customers," he said. Buyers get employee pricing on 2013 to 2015 models, which is a certain percentage below dealer invoice, and it replaces the previous $500 offer. It will be available throughout the duration of the recall.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the original $500 enticement wasn't enough to bring buyers back to showrooms. Many of the roughly 2.6 million affected vehicles are on their second or third owners, and they might not be able to afford a new car.

GM's recall campaign for the ignition switches began in April. Cain said the effort is going as planned. Delphi is running multiple shifts for replacement parts and may add a second or third production line. The company expects to have a majority of vehicles repaired by October. In the meantime, affected drivers can take advantage of free loaners while their car is serviced.

The Obama Car: Chromed Cadillac CTS

While he might be the man of the people, Barack Obama is still a president, so whenever he wants to go out for a stroll, he does so in his armour plated Cadillac. It has guns, plating its own oxygen and even a night-vision camera.

This is probably NOT Obama's car, but it's so interesting that it might as well be. The owner of this Cadillac CTS Coupe had it chromed out, so now, it looks like a brand new nickel. Plastered over the passenger side door is a photo of him from Time magazine and the "Forward" messing from President Obama’s new re-election campaign slogan.

Who needs guns when America has cars like these. Now all we need to do is feed the homeless!

Cadillac ELR, Nissan Resonance and Ford Atlas win Eyes on Design awards

This year's annual Eyes on Design awards were presented at the end of press days for the Detroit Auto Show on Tuesday. Given out for the best production and concept car designs that debuted at the show, and voted on by an esteemed panel of actual car designers, this year's award for best production vehicle design went to the 2014 Cadillac ELR. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, which was the show favorite among Autoblog editors, apparently did not impress the Eyes on Design judges enough with its all-new vent-festooned design.

The award for best concept design was actually split as a tie among the Nissan Resonance and Ford Atlas concepts. Last year's winners were the 2013 Ford Fusion and the Lexus LF-LC concept.

The Eyes on Design organization also presented a new honor this year called the Catalyst Award to Bob Lutz, former Vice Chairman of General Motors. Lutz is reported to have given a defense of design in his acceptance speech, arguing that advancements in quality across the industry as a whole have made good design a key differentiator for buyers.

Cadillac Ponders New Flagship and BMW 1-Series Rival

The all-new Cadillac ATS is a great car, if we are to believe all the reviews we have seen so far - we have not seen/driven the car yet. It is praised for its balanced design, good interior, excellent handling and strong lineup of engines.

It is the model which has brought about a massive image change for the luxury automaker, and if they are capable of delivering more cars like the talented ATS, then they will do fine, and even begin to challenge the Germans - hopefully in Europe as well, where we hope to see the ATS with a diesel engine, as the BMW 3-Series has been sitting atop the podium for far too long, and new talent is required to shake things up.

Well, that just might happen, as Cadillac is reportedly considering the creation of a BMW 1-Series rival, along with a slew of new models, which could increase the number of cars in the range to ten. Aside from the smaller car, a new flagship is also being taken into consideration, as well as a small crossover, a seven-seater crossover, a two-door version of the ATS and a drop-top version of it.

We also want to see a hot version of the ATS, because it looks like it is a car with a lot of potential. THe chassis is balanced and the handling is sweet, and with some minor sporty touches and a bit more power, it sounds like a very tempting prospect.

Cadillac VP Calls ELR Range-Extender a ‘Landmark’ in the Company’s History

 

The ELR is undoubtedly a very important car for Cadillac, and while it shares many bits with the more mundane-looking Chevrolet Volt, it is considerably sportier and more luxurious - it is also a much neater design package, which will surely attract buyers from around the world.

This is important because Cadillac want to sell the range-extender in other major world markets, aside from the US, where it is expected to sell well. The all-new ELR was first shown at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, where it was easily one of the stars, and one of the most anticipated premieres.

Bob Ferguson, the new Vice President for Cadillac said that the ELR would be "manufactured in a limited number" and sold "only on the largest global markets, including China and Europe."

He added: "I believe it's a landmark in Cadillac's history [ . . . ] It's a special car that exemplifies Cadillac's greatest achievements through history."

Furthermore, the ELR is also touted as showing the way Cadillac interiors will look in the company’s future cars. Regarding this matter, Ferguson said: "In its simplest terms, the Cadillac ELR is art and science personified." We agree with the statement, as the inside of the sporty extended-range hybrid is probably the best we`ve seen so far in any new Caddy.

The Cadillac design and engineering teams were smiling like a bunch of proud papas here in Detroit this morning, as the Wreath and Crest crew pulled the curtain back on their 2014 ELR. The house was packed for the ELR's coming out party, and reaction was enthusiastic amongst the murmuring media, as far as we could gather, while the flashes were firing.

In fact, we think that the sleek styling and aggressive proportions of the Voltec-powered ELR looked even better in the metal than they did in the first official images we saw earlier. Further, the leather-lined interior seems custom made for serious driving, even if the ELR is slightly less than rocket-ship quick.

2013 North American Car of the Year: Cadillac ATS

Cadillac spent a lot of time to make sure its compact sports saloon is every bit as German as the BMW 3-Series. A brand new chassis was developed specifically for this car, and then it was honed for month on the Nurburgring test track in Germany.

Cadillac ATS, Ram 1500 named 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year

As is tradition, the 2013 Detroit Auto Show kicks off with the announcement of the 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the year awards. And without further ado, we present your winners: the Cadillac ATS and Ram 1500.

Runners-up for the award are the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord in the car category, and the Mazda CX-5 and Ford C-Max in the truck/utility class. The winners were determined by a non-profit, independent jury of 50 American and Canadian journalists, including some members of the Autoblog staff.

This is the first win for Cadillac as a Car of the Year, though the CTS was a finalist in 2008. General Motors brands have won the Car of the Year award five times. This win for the 2013 Ram 1500 marks the third truck win for the Chrysler Group. The Ram (well, Dodge Ram) first won the award in 1994.

DETROIT, - Domestic automakers dominated as the Cadillac ATS took the 2013 North American Car of the Year and the Ram 1500 won the 2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year.

The winners were revealed Monday morning at a news conference at the North American International Auto Show.

The winners were chosen by a jury of 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The awards – now in their 20th year - are unique in the United States because instead of being given by a single media outlet they are awarded by a group of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada who represent magazines, television, radio, newspapers and web sites.

The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, comfort, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

The jurors gave the ATS 207 points, the Accord 159 points and the Fusion 124 points.

It was the first win for Cadillac ATS and the fifth car win for General Motors. The Cadillac CTS was a finalist in 2008.

The jurors gave the Ram 1500 261 points, the CX-5 142 points and the C-Max 87 points.

It was the third truck win for Chrysler. The Dodge Ram 1500 won in 1994.

Domestic automakers have won North American Car of the Year 11 times. Japanese automakers have won three times. European automakers have won four times. A Korean automaker (Hyundai) has won twice.

Domestic automakers have won North American Truck of the Year 13 times. Japanese automakers have won four times. European automakers have won three times.

To be eligible a vehicle must be all new or substantially changed. The jurors considered dozens of new vehicles before sending their ballots to Michelle Collins, a partner at Deloitte & Touche early in December.

On December 12th the three car and truck finalists were announced. But only Ms. Collins knew the winners until she handed over envelopes today to Michelle Krebs, a juror and
Editor-at-Large for Edmunds.com.

The awards were inspired by the "Car of the Year" in Europe.

They are administered by an organizing committee and are funded with dues paid by the jurors. There are no paid positions. Automakers do not pay to have their vehicles considered or to use the awards in ads.

The "2012 North American Car of the Year" was the Hyundai Elantra.

Last year's "2012 North American Truck of the Year" was the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

Next-gen Cadillac CTS-Vs caught in parking lot

A pair of camouflaged Cadillac CTS prototypes were spotted, and thankfully photographed, outside a grocery store in Southern California. From the image above – there are plenty more if you click over to TotalCarScore.com – it appears these could be testers for the 2014 CTS-V, but that is just speculation. We've seen the obvious "V" motif in the grille before, and there's what could be another "V" in the design of the side mirrors.

The hood on the car in the background appears to include two bulges, but the single shot that affords a tiny peek under the hood shows reveals only the airbox. Plenty of rumors, and the sight of an engine cover inscribed with the words "Twin Turbo," have caused people to wonder if a twin-turbo V6 will live under the production car's hood instead of the V8 currently there. In back, instead of the round tailpipes found outboard on all the CTS sedans, there's a pair of integrated tips in a parallelogram shape. A new shifter with contrasting stitching was spied in the cabin.

If predictions hold up it will arrive later this year. When it does, expect the body underneath all that camo to be softer on the eye compared to the current car – less science and more art. For now, hit the link to see more spy shots of what's coming.

GM claims it's first to sell million 30+ mpg vehicles

As we continue to put together all the data for the year-end edition of By The Numbers, General Motors has announced that it sold more than a million vehicles in the US last year that achieved at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Cadillac moves to trademark LTS, is it for a rear-drive flagship?

Car and Driver is back with more info on the potential future of Cadillac, having discovered that our finest domestic luxury brand has filed a trademark application for the name "LTS." The reasoned speculation: that since Cadillac tends to use the names it files to protect, LTS could be applied to one of the two rear-drive sedans expected to arrive soon – either the eventual successor to the just-introduced XTS or an Omega-platformed top-tier flagship. Another possibility is the name XLS.

More interesting are the dimensional roles that Car and Driver predicts for the coming lineup. With the CTS growing in order to put some girth between it and the ATS, making it a straighter comparison to the BMW 5 Series, the XTS replacement would fit between the 5 Series and 7 Series, and the flagship "would exceed even the long-wheelbase 7 in size." That might leave the flagship no larger than the current DTS, which is already 2.4 inches longer than the 760Li, but if the report is correct it will be interesting to see how Cadillac differentiates that middle sedan from the other two.

2013 Cadillac XTS Gets CUE Reconfigurable Instrument Cluster

Cadillac kept some of its best cards close to its chest with the XTS luxury sedan. Sure, it might not be a BMW 5-Series, but it does bring comparable toys to the game. Case in point: a reconfigurable instrument cluster, much like that BMW introduced recently as an option.

Since BMW’s has just introduced the system and it’s not even available yet, you can’t really accuse Cadillac of copying anything, and it’s nice to see they are finding their own luxury voice. This feature is sure to bring in new customers looking for the right American car. In addition, the feature will only become available from Mercedes starting with the next generation of sedans.

Of the four setups available, our favorite has to be the performance model, with a red line at 6,500 rpm and very modern design.
