[Report] Saab 9-3 production to start in China in 2013

[Report] Saab 9-3 production to start in China in 2013
We knew that National Electric Vehicle Sweden planned to restart production of the last-gen Saab 9-3 at some point in the future, we just didn't know exactly when, or exactly where. As it turns out, the answers to those questions are soon, and China.

Though NEVS had initially said it will build vehicles in Sweden before shipping them to China, the latest report from Autocar suggests that the cars will instead be built right in Quingdao starting later in 2013. That's right, this calendar year. Also on the docket is a followup electric version of the 9-3, which is slated to come to market in 2014 in an effort to satiate China's wish that there be half a million EVs silently filling its streets within the next two years.

NEVS wants to be part of the EV solution, but it's not going to be easy. Naturally, if these cars are to be built in China, a factory has to be located or built, tooling needs to be in place, workers need to be hired and trained and a lengthy trail of paperwork has to be signed off by the government before even the well-known gasoline-powered 9-3 can be a reality, let along the unknown quantity that is the 9-3 ePower.

In other words... Må kraften vara med dig, NEVS.

NEVS to build new Saab models in China's Qingdao

NEVS to build new Saab models in China's Qingdao

National Electric Vehicle Sweden has officially signed a deal with Qingdao Qingbo Investment Company that will see the NEVS build EVs in Qingdao, China. The move is the first step on the road toward eventually selling vehicles in China. Reuters reports that the Chinese company has agreed to invest $307.33 million, after which point Qingdao Qingbo will receive 22 percent of the NEVS shares. Currently, there's no word on exactly when the funds and shares will change hands, but the Swedish automaker has previously said it fully intends to launch its first EV by early 2014.

NEVS has also made waves about potentially building a version of the old Saab 9-3 with a traditional internal combustion driveline. Currently, the manufacturer says it plans to ship the vehicles it builds in Sweden to the Qingdao port and distribute them to the rest of China from there. Later down the line, a manufacturing facility in Qingdao will supply the country with Chinese-built Saab models.

Chinese City Qingdao to Give Saab $307 Million Boost

Chinese City Qingdao to Give Saab $307 Million Boost

Ever since National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, or NEVS, took control of Saab, things have gotten extremely quiet, and aside from the auctioning off of some leftover cars they had, there have been no news from Sweden for quite a while. They also closed down their Australian operation earlier this week.

Saab Australia Closed

Saab Australia Closed

While we wait for them to be rescued by the Chinese or be turned into an electric car company, Saab’s death is still taking its toll across the world. Since the beginning of 2013, Saab Cars Australia has been placed under voluntary administration, closing down its business in Port Melbourne.

Saab to hire 200 engineers, might build gas cars with Mahindra

Saab to hire 200 engineers, might build gas cars with Mahindra
The brand formerly known as Saab is still intent on teaching The Little Engine That Could a few ticks about persistence. We say "formerly known" because it turns out that National Electric Vehicle Swedent (NEVS), the Sino-Japanese investment consortium that just bought the majority of Saab's assets, minus Saab Automobile Parts AB, may not actually own the rights to the Saab brand name. According to a report in Di.se via Saabs United, NEVS will need to negotiate with Scania and the Swedish aerospace and defense group, Saab AB, for the right to name its forthcoming electric car the Saab 9-3.

NEVS is hiring 200 engineers now to work on its electric car program, and reports are that it will hire more as it gets closer to the 2014 launch. It will be based on the current (read: ancient) 9-3, and we hope NEVS is succeeds in getting the naming rights, because the NEVS 9-3 just doesn't have the same ring. NEVS will likely target China as the model's main market.

However, it's rumors of their second negotiating ploy that we're really rooting for: to work with Mahinda & Mahindra, the Indian company once in the running for Saab's assets, develop a petrol-powered 9-3 on the next-generation Phoenix platform, based on Jason Castriota's design.

NEVS is also said to be planning new models "based on Japanese technology," yet with just under $1 billion U.S. committed to the electric program, the Di.se report says NEVS wants to have other products to generate revenue. A conventionally powered gasoline-engined car could be the answer. There only connection between Saab AB and Mahindra appears to be that India is one of Saab's largest markets and Mahindra is Indian. Separately, Mahindra could develop the car and provide small, "low carbon output" engines. It's tenuous, which characterizes just about everything that happens with Saab these days, but perhaps NEVS sees it as enough of a lure for everyone involved to make it worth the attempt.

The amount of speculation here makes the chances of a Phoenix-based 9-3 too thin to even call slim, but we won't bet against it, if only because one was quite far along in development under the company's previous owners. And besides, we'd really like to see it happen.

Saab Reborn as EV Maker?

Saab Reborn as EV Maker?
Having followed the Saab story closely from the very beginning, we are finally relieved that the ailing Swedish carmaker has been purchased and is set to restart actual car production at some point in the (hopefully near) future.

Their buyers, NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden) will undoubtedly try to start production of ‘something’ as soon as possible. However, what will roll off the production line in Trollhättan may not be what you were expecting. Reports indicate that Saab will now make EVs which, at first, will be made for the Chinese market, with the first car reportedly being a 9-3-based EV.

Sadly, though, the excellent 9-5 will apparently not be making it back into production as GM is unwilling to give permission to the new owners to start making it - what a shame! However, we hope that the 9-5 too will be reborn as a “premium electric vehicle” made in Europe, for the European market.

Following the 9-3-based model, the next EV to be launched will be a Phoenix platform-based vehicle. You may remember the PhoeniX concept revealed by Saab at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show - it also previewed a new platform bearing the same name. It was originally intended to underpin a ‘new breed’ of Saabs, following the acquisition by Spyker, but will now be used in an upcoming EV.

Regardless of the new owners’ nationality, they must not forget (or ignore and neglect) the fact that Saab is a deeply European and Scandinavian company, deeply proud of its roots and heritage, which needs to be treaded as such in order to obtain true success and cult status in years to come, bringing Saab to the forefront of the automotive industry, albeit as an EV maker.

Saab sold! Again. Probably.

You'll note that we have yet to remove Saab from the dropdown menu at the top of the Autoblog home page. Indeed, for a bankrupt company that hasn't built a new car from scratch yet this year, Saab generates a surprising amount of news, however, little of it has been the good kind. Perhaps that will all change today, as this latest report indicates that the company has actually been sold for real this time.

According to The Local, an English-language Swedish news site, the new owner of Saab is understood to be National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, "a Swedish-registered company founded by a Hong Kong-based firm specialised in alternative energy and a Japanese investment fund."

NEVS would only confirm that it had made a bid for Saab before the April 7 deadline, according to the report, which said that court administrators also refused to comment, though an official announcement is expected later this month. The offer is said to be in the $208-$250 million range and excludes the parts operation.

The report says news of the sale was shared by the Trollhättan city manager, and though she did not know who the buyer was, she said she had been told the deal would be inked this week. Shortly after media began reporting the story, however, a public relations official for the city denied that anyone at the city knew about any deal, characterizing the leak as a "misinterpretation," according to the report.

While we have imagined many times in recent months that we had written the final word on this Swedish soap opera, clearly this isn't it.

Saab Parts To Be Offered To North America

Saab Parts To Be Offered To North America
Saab Automobile AB may be bankrupt, but there are still a large variety of their vehicles roaming around the globe that will eventually, need attention.  In North America, getting parts for a low volume car make, especially one that is currently silent, can be tricky but 9-5 owners should slap on a for sale sign just yet.  With the name sake scrambling to find new parents, the company responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of individual parts is still going and will soon reach out to North America.

Saab Automobile Parts AB, different from Saab, will open a new North American subsidiary in June.  The new division will be supply Saab Genuine Parts as well as technical support to the U.S. and Canada.  Named North America Distribution Services Inc., the outfit will be stationed in Michigan.  ”Today there are around half a million Saab cars on the roads in North America – the largest fleet of Saabs in one single market in the world. Our establishment in North America will secure support to Saab owners in the USA and Canada and ensure they have access to Saab Genuine Parts, service programs and technical support”, said Lennart Ståhl, CEO of Saab Automobile Parts AB.

To ensure the parts stay strong, Saab Automobile Parts AB will continue to work with the main automaker’s administrators.  According to an Autoblog article, this is so large pieces such as body parts can be built at the Trollhättan, Sweden assembly plant.  As of now, the supply company has about 70,000 parts on hand and about 1,200 warehouses worldwide.

Youngman bids anew for Saab

Youngman bids anew for Saab
After withdrawing its original $492 million bid for Saab, Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile has returned to the bidding with a fresh offer of $552 million, according to a report from Bloomberg. Right now, Youngman is bidding for Saab against a group comprised of a Japanese investment firm, Sun Investment and Hong Kong-based National Modern Energy Holdings.

As we told you earlier, the duo of Sun Investment and National Modern Energy Holdings has formed a new company called National Electric Vehicle Sweden, created with the sole purpose of buying up all of Saab's assets.

When approached by Automotive News Europe and Bloomberg, a spokesperson for the bankruptcy administration declined to comment on when a decision would be reached.

China's Youngman bails on Saab, Mahindra still in the mix

China's Youngman bails on Saab, Mahindra still in the mix
Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile has been jettisoned from the dwindling pool of bidders for Saab after tendering an offer of $492 million for the whole kaboodle. Exact reasons weren't given for Youngman leaving the table, but according to a report in Autoweek.nl, "Chinese bureaucracy" was partially to blame and there apparently wasn't complete confidence in the Chinese company's finances.

Reports say the bidding is meant to close in the next week, but we still don't know who all the bidders are – India's Mahindra & Mahindra, China's Geely/Volvo and at least one as-yet-unknown entity are after the whole company or select assets. Swedish media was hinting at another bidder with electric car knowledge, not from China, to take control of Saab. And if that same Autoweek.nl story is correct, Spyker's Victor Muller didn't leave the premises empty-handed, as "Spyker would be the licensing agent of the Saab 9-5 and continue to be paid for its use."

Saab victorious in inaugural Swedish Touring Car race

Saab victorious in inaugural Swedish Touring Car race

The sequel to Frankenstein is being written in Swedish, by Saab. The ostensibly former car company could teach the good doctor about life after death, having earned itself more good news by winning the inaugural race of the Swedish Touring Car series. Team Tidö's black 9-3 racer was on pole and carried that lead all the way to the checkered flag. Driving it was Linus Ohlsson, whose past triumphs include taking third in the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia series.

Just to be clear, all the cars in the series are silhouette racers, with Saab, Volvo, BMW and Citroën bodies placed over a spec chassis. Still, it was the body with the Griffin badge that beat the rest, and we all know Saab's faithful could use something to cheer about these days. Scroll down for a video recap of the race; it's in Swedish, so hit the CC button for English subtitles if you need 'em.

Swedish Union Send Letter to President Obama to Save Saab

Swedish Union Send Letter to President Obama to Save Saab
Saab may not be dead just yet. Despite filing for bankruptcy in December, due to GM’s refusal to allow permission for their sale to a new owner, fearing that GM tech may end up in competitors’ hands.

Recently, a Swedish union called IF Metall have sent a letter to US president Barack Obama in which they are requesting his help with saving Saab and the livelihoods of its more than 4,500 (now ex-) workers. The letter which was posted on SverigesRadio asks Obama to tell GM to allow the sale of Saab to a new owner, along with some of their more basic technologies. The letter also stated that Saab would never pose a threat to GM, were it to restart production on its own and with a new owner, as it is a niche brand and only appeals to certain people (architects and interior decorators mostly).

No official reply from GM or Barack Obama have been given so far, though we’re really hoping that this final effort to save Saab succeeds as they are a brand that deserves to carry on thanks to their ‘different’ (in a good way) philosophy to making cars.

Hirsch Performance Saab 9-3 and 9-5 - It only laughs when I Hirsch

Certain Saab owners can now have their ride fettled by Swiss tuning specialist Hirsch Performance. The ’07 to ’11 9-3 and ’10/11 9-5 are the lucky recipients of this attention. Hirsch, a company that has enjoyed a long relationship with Saab in Europe, offers a power hike of 30 hp, new exhausts, wheels, springs, aero appendages, aluminum pedals and leather. If any of this stuff is installed within 60 days of buying a new car from a dealer, the same warranty applies. And Hirsch claims that its mods do not affect any safety or emissions systems.

Saab PhoeniX Concept

• Design and technical features to shape next generation of Saab cars
• Minimalist cabin with ground-breaking Saab IQon infotainment system
• Right sized turbo engine and innovative Saab eXWD for electric rear drive

Showcases technologies in all-new vehicle architecture

Sleek, innovative and exceptionally efficient: the Saab PhoeniX concept car showcases design features and technologies which will shape the next generation of cars from Saab.

Based on an new architecture which will empower the next Saab 9-3 model, the PhoeniX introduces ‘aeromotional’ design: a visual evocation of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that inspired the creators of Saab’s first car, the iconic Ursaab.
The PhoeniX embraces teardrop, ‘liquid metal’ forms and a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse that gives fresh expression to Saab’s signature ‘wraparound’ and translucent ice-block design themes.

The clean, muscular shape enables an exceptionally low drag co-efficient of just 0.25 and also explores the potential for airflow management through the use of distinctive, side-mounted ‘winglets’.

Butterfly opening doors give easy access to a 2+2 cabin that blends simplicity with technology. It has a minimalist, ‘stripped out’ feel, including a new expression of Saab’s driver-focused layout and a world debut for Saab’s innovative IQon infotainment and communications system. In true Saab tradition, there is also a surprisingly versatile cargo deck.
“The PhoeniX establishes a new reference point for the future of Saab product design,” says Jason Castriota, Saab Automobile’s Executive Design Director. “It symbolizes a renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion that drove Saab to build its first car. We’re now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call ‘aeromotional’ design, adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in the Saab portfolio.”

Under its rippling bodywork, the Saab PhoeniX deploys an innovative driveline, with an electrically-driven rear axle mated to a sophisticated 200 hp, 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine. The result is an intelligent, hybrid all-wheel-drive capability that enhances driving pleasure while reducing fuel consumption. Combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are projected to be just 5.0 l/100 km and 119 g/km.
Aeromotional design

The PhoeniX’s ‘aeromotional’ design theme is inspired by Saab’s aviation roots and draws expression from Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned Saab’s first generation of cars.

The entire form of the PhoeniX is seemingly molded by the wind. Tightly-wrapped by a liquid-like skin, the teardrop cabin resembles a dark ice block and appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork. Two prominent ripples flow along the hood into the disguised windshield pillars, as if barely able to contain a powerful structure underneath.

At the rear, the dark screen also bursts through the outer skin of the rear deck, The tapering form hints at the teardrop rear styling of Ursaab, while the ‘sawn off’, kamm tail echoes a form from Saab’s first coupé, the Sonett.

The low, frontal styling features a stretched interpretation of Saab’s signature three-port grille. A body-colored central wing is now dominant and, in keeping with the car’s minimalist design, LED headlamps are almost invisibly located at its tips. The new grille and hood forms are among the styling themes likely to be seen in future Saab production cars.

Butterfly-opening doors provide enhanced access to the low-slung cabin. There are no visible door handles or mirrors to disrupt airflow, and small cameras on slim stalks provide rearward vision.
Roof-mounted ‘winglets’ enable PhoeniX to cleave the air as efficiently as possible. They channel airflow from the side of the car and direct it across the rear deck, reducing lift forces for greater stability without increasing drag.
Minimalist interior

In true Scandinavian tradition, the 2+2 cabin adopts a clean, minimalist look. It has the ‘stripped out’ feel of a competition car, with shell-like seats and metalized interior sections that mimic the exposed network of a rollover cage.

Fresh expression is given to Saab’s traditional, driver-focused instrument layout. A circular pod in front of the driver, shaped like the afterburner of a jet engine, presents data in tandem with the head-up display.

Angled at 45º to the driver, a separate module accommodates Saab’s advanced IQon infotainment and communications system. For good ergonomics, the 8-inch touch-screen is as close to the driver’s finger tips as the steering wheel.
Saab IQon is a ground-breaking car communications platform using Google's Android operating system. Based on pioneering ‘open innovation’ with third-party service providers and applications developers, it comprises an embedded computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet when the car’s ignition is switched on. The touch-screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board music storage and smartphone-like downloading of applications.

Red illumination for all instrument and ambient cabin lighting brings warmth and emotion to the cabin. This includes the floor, where LED light tubes are exposed by perforations in the black carpeting. It is all part of the new ‘aeromotional’ design strategy, incorporating ‘fire and ice’ effects.
The PhoeniX’s curvaceous rear deck disguises a deep-opening tailgate. It gives access to a flat cargo deck, including fold-flat rear seatbacks and a cargo track for adaptable load carrying.

Efficient propulsion

Under its sculpted hood and beneath its cargo deck, the PhoeniX advances Saab’s rightsizing powertrain strategy. Its propulsion system combines a highly efficient, 1.6-liter turbo engine with innovative, electric rear wheel drive technology.
The compact, all-aluminum gasoline engine packs 200 hp (147 kW) and includes variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. A stainless steel tank is fitted, which is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design.

The engine is supported by Saab’s innovative eXWD system. It comprises a rear drive unit housing a 25 kW (34 hp) electric motor/generator powered by a small battery pack. Regenerative braking is used to sustain the battery’s charge.

Now under development for the next generation of Saab cars, this hybrid propulsion system enables the benefits of all-wheel-drive while also reducing fuel consumption. Using a six-speed manual transmission, projected combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are just 5.0 l/100 km and 119 g/km.

The driver can select one of three eXWD operating modes. The default Eco mode delivers optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the gasoline engine at low speeds; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.

Inside and out, the Saab PhoeniX showcases new design directions and technologies that will be part of forthcoming Saab products.

New Saab 9-4X: World Premiere - Web Exclusive

  • Saab enters growing crossover segment
  • Progressive Scandinavian design inspired by Aero X concept
  • Car-like driving dynamics challenge best-in-class performance
  • Advanced Saab XWD mated with Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis
  • Spacious cabin, driver-focused cockpit and ample storage
  • 300 hp 2.8V6 turbo engine
  • Flexible cargo management system
The new 9-4X brings unique Saab design and engineering values to the growing mid-size crossover segment. With distinctive Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired looks, it also offers car-like handling and ride characteristics that challenge class benchmarks.

Making its world premiere at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show, the 9-4X expands Saab's product portfolio to three car lines and will provide a fresh, alternative choice for independently-minded crossover buyers. It is an important next-step in the Swedish brand's renaissance as an independent premium car manufacturer.

Muscular and sporty to drive, the 9-4X is aligned in looks and size between the 9-3X and new 9-5 saloon. Outside and inside, it communicates its' Saab identity with clean, uncluttered design and signature motifs, such as its wraparound-effect windshield, ice block lighting theme, driver-focused cockpit and flexible cargo handling.

In true Saab tradition, the 9-4X delivers on its sporty persona. It is configured around a unique, purpose-designed crossover body structure, which has been key to delivering its exceptional handling and ride properties. Car-like driving dynamics are supported by Saab's advanced all-wheel-drive system, XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Under the bonnet nestles a compact and efficient V6 turbocharged engine. The 300 hp, 2.8-litre twin-scroll turbocharging engine is mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive electronic control.

"The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand," says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Ake Jonsson. "It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we're confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand."

The 9-4X goes on sale in North America in May next year, with sales in Europe and other global markets due to begin from August. UK sales start late in 2011.

    Body sculpted by Saab

The 9-4X cuts a broad and powerful stance, with clean, uncluttered lines that echo Saab's Scandinavian design ethos. Its distinctive face, in common with the new 9-5 saloon, draws inspiration from the award-winning Aero X concept car, with a deep, three-port grille and 'ice-block'-effect lighting themes.

Disguised windshield and door pillars create Saab's signature wraparound-effect, the single glasshouse graphic emphasizing the brand's traditional 'cockpit' look. Other exterior Saab identifiers include the shaping of the headlamps, a 'hockey stick' waistline and strong C-pillars complemented by a wraparound-effect rear screen.

The roofline is visually lowered and extended by a rear spoiler integrated in to the tailgate. At the rear, the lighting carries forward a signature introduced by the new 9-5 saloon. An 'ice-block' bar lit by LEDs extends across the lower tailgate and wraps around the light units. Twin rhomboid-shaped exhaust tailpipes are also neatly integrated into the lower bumper molding.

Overall, the 9-4X's bodywork is noticeably free from unnecessary decoration or trim. A dark protective applique is applied to the lower body, but there are no wheel-arch claddings or protective body panels.

    Cockpit-inspired cabin

The spacious cabin provides comfortable accommodation for up to five adults and is defined by Saab's signature driver-focused cockpit layout. The centre console, centre stack and main instrument display are presented within a single form that sweeps up around the driver and is finished with a fibre-effect carbon trim. Other subtle references to Saab's aviation heritage include a selectable, aircraft attitude-style speed read-out, green illumination for the needles of the three main dials and traditional Saab 'joystick' adjusters for the mesh-style air vents. The ignition - a start/stop button - is, of course, located between the front seats in true Saab tradition, adjacent to the shift lever.

Large, supportive seats include a standard eight-way electrical adjustment for the driver and front passenger. Rear passengers enjoy particularly roomy accommodation as rear space is not compromised by the presence of a third row of seats. They also benefit from an independent three-way manual adjustment of the rake of each 60/40 fold seatback.

Ample onboard storage includes double-decked pockets in all doors, a two-tier front glovebox and a deep bin in the centre console with 12-volt, USB and AUX connections. Rear passengers have additional storage in the rear face of the centre console and the centre armrest.

Infotainment includes a 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound and an eight-inch touchscreen, hard disk-based navigation system includes a bird's eye map view and 10 GB storage for music files. Communication on the move is supported by an integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone system, which functions via voice command and steering wheel controls, as well as via the infotainment panel.

In the rear, passengers can select their own onboard audio/visual entertainment through an optional dedicated unit in the back of the centre console. This has a video AUX input and two eight-inch screens in the rear face of the front seatbacks.

    Adaptable cargo carrying

The boot of the 9-4X is optimized for space and ease of use. The 60/40 split seatbacks fold down in a single movement without having to move the seat cushions or remove the retractable head restraints, providing a completely flat cargo deck.

The front section of the boot floor is hinged and can be opened via an aircraft-shaped handle to reveal additional under floor storage. Floor space can be tailored as required by an optional, U-shaped track with a telescopic cargo dividing rail, which can be moved to any position to keep items in place.

For additional convenience the tailgate is available with a remotely controlled, hydraulically powered operation. It can open fully, or to a lower programmable position if there is restricted clearance overhead, such as in the garage.

    On the move

The Saab 9-4X brings car-like handling and ride qualities to the crossover segment. Extensive development testing alongside competitor vehicles shows the 9-4X has a level of dynamic performance - in ride refinement as well as handling - that challenges the very best in its class.
Key to such excellent driving qualities is a unique body structure, purpose-designed for a crossover application and free from compromises through adapting an existing saloon or estate format.
Advanced driving technologies include Saab XWD, the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, which infinitely varies drive torque between the front and rear axles. This pre-emptive, lightweight and fast-acting system offers optimised grip in all conditions, dry or wet, smooth or loose, on road or off-road. It is combined with an electronically-controlled rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) which can transfer up to 50% of rear torque between the rear wheels, diverting torque to the wheel with more grip.

Saab DriveSense offers an adaptive chassis function which uses real time damping control to help the 9-4X react to how it is being driven and to changing road conditions. In addition to the default 'Intelligent' setting, the driver can select 'Comfort' and 'Sport' modes. An 'Eco' mode, activated via a separate button, also re-maps the throttle pedal and gearshifting patterns for optimal fuel economy.
Other driving aids include variable effort steering, a function of Saab DriveSense, and standard bi-xenon adaptive lighting, which provides better illumination of upcoming bends by linking the direction of the headlamp beam to the steering angle.

    Efficient power packs

The Saab 9-4X is offered with an efficient all-aluminum V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and Saab XWD. The light and compact, 24-valve engine feature variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides, and boasts a power rating typical of a larger displacement engine.
The 2.8-litre turbo engine packs 300 hp (224 kW) and generates an impressive 400 Nm spread of torque between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. It delivers zero to 62mph acceleration in 8.3 seconds. Fuel consumption figures are still being finalised and will be published closer to launch.

    Leading safety performance

Excellent safety complements strong performance, and the 9-4X benefits from more than 50 years of Saab experience in working with occupant protection. Saab crash testing and computer simulations are based on what happens in real collisions, on real roads. Many in-house tests developed by Saab are over and above those legally required or carried out by consumer test organizations.

The success of Saab's work is reflected in surveys of real-life collisions by the US Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Swedish Folksam insurance company, where Saab cars have consistently scored well, several times being ranked best in their segment. All current Saab models are maximum 5-star performers in EuroNCAP crash safety tests.

    • Across-the-range reduction of 10 percent in CO2 emissions
    • Improved fuel economy with 62.8mpg on the combined cycle
Trollhättan, Sweden: Class-leading CO2 emissions of 119 g/km are on offer within the latest Saab 9-3 range, which benefits from an across-the-board emissions reduction of 10 percent, making this car a perfect choice for company car users, and a cost-effective option for customers keen to reduce fuel consumption and their carbon footprint.

For Model Year 2011, all 9-3 diesel engines have more advanced twin turbocharged engines and, in the saloon, all three engines give CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km and exceptionally low combined cycle fuel consumption of 62.8 mpg. The most powerful variant, the 180 hp 1.9 TTiD, now delivers the most efficient performance for a four cylinder diesel engine in the marketplace in terms of CO2 per unit of horsepower.

    CO2 reduced to 119 g/km

Saab engineers have delivered class-leading diesel performance following an 18-month development program which focused on achieving an average 12 percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. For saloon models, the result is emissions below 120 g/km, a key vehicle taxation threshold in the UK market, and the cleanest and most efficient Saab ever.
By introducing twin turbochargers across the diesel range, Saab engineers have optimised the engines to harness more power and torque in the interests of fuel consumption and lower emissions.
The 1.9-litre diesel line-up now comprises a 130 hp TTiD unit (replacing the previous 120 hp TiD engine), a 160 hp version (replacing the 150 hp TiD engine) and a range-topping 180 hp/400 Nm variant.

With these engines and manual transmission, the 9-3 saloon delivers outstanding combined cycle fuel economy of 62.8 mpg and 119 g/km CO2 emissions, and is tax-exempt for vehicle excise duty. The SportWagon offers an impressive 61.4 mpg and low CO2 emissions of 122g/km and for the Convertible, the respective figures are 54.3 mpg and 137g/km.
To dip under the 120 g/km level, optimised gearing is fitted without affecting acceleration or top speed.

    Other efficiency measures introduced include:
    • Recalibrated engine management with improved fuel injection and combustion control
    • Revised gear ratios to match new power and torque characteristics
    • Improved electrical power management, including sophisticated alternator control when battery charging is not required and more efficient electro-hydraulic power steering assistance
    • Low rolling resistance tires for reduced road friction
    • Improved aerodynamics, with rear underbody deflector blades
    • Reduced weight through lighter construction and sound-deadening materials
    • Revised torque converter for automatic transmission with optimised shift programming.
The all-turbo petrol line-up, which features an average reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 7 percent, also benefits from some of these measures.

    Standard Equipment Enhanced for MY11

In addition to the significant powertrain improvements, standard equipment levels have been increased for MY11. All 9-3 models now come with Bluetooth phone integration and heated front seats as standard. Other model year enhancements include the introduction of a ‘change-up’ indicator in the instrument cluster to encourage economical driving; a clutch interlock system on manual transmissions; child seat top tether anchorage points and a perforated leather sport steering wheel on Aero models. Two new exterior paint colours have been added to the range – Diamond Silver and Java and rear engine badging has been changed to follow the same style as used on the new 9-5 saloon.

Model Year 2011: New Saab 9-5 Saloon Range - Web Exclusive

    • Two engines added to powertrain line-up
    • Sporty, 190 hp 2.0TTiD – first Saab diesel to offer cross-wheel drive (XWD)
    • Efficient, 180 hp 1.6T petrol develops class-leading 112 hp per litre
Trollhättan, Sweden: Just two months after its launch, the appeal of the new Saab 9-5 saloon is further broadened by the introduction of two new engines.

For Model Year 2011, a 190 hp, 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel makes Saab cross XWD, the widely-acclaimed all-wheel-drive system, available for the first time with a Saab diesel engine. Using twin turbochargers, this new engine combines strong performance with impressive fuel efficiency and joins the current 160 hp, 2.0-litre single turbo diesel engine.

The petrol line-up is extended by the addition of an efficient, 180 hp, 1.6-litre turbo, reinforcing Saab’s engine rightsizing strategy.

The Saab 9-5’s high-tech options list is expanded by the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and an exterior paint colour palette that is increased from 7 to 11 colours.

    2.0TTiD twin turbo diesel

The new, more powerful, twin turbo diesel engine generates substantial torque of 400 Nm from just 1,750 rpm, in addition to maximum power of 190 hp. The result is 0-62mph in under nine seconds. Projected combined cycle fuel consumption of 47.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km are equally impressive, keeping the 2.0TTiD below the 160g/km write down threshold for company car buyers.
The sequential, twin turbocharging system uses two turbochargers of different sizes with by-pass valves that direct the exhaust gas stream between the two turbines. At low engine speeds, the small turbocharger supplies boost pressure independent of engine load. At intermediate engine speeds under higher loads, both the small and large turbochargers provide boost pressure; while at high engine speeds and load, only the large turbocharger is engaged. This arrangement provides the driver with the ‘best of both worlds’: good, instant torque at low engine speeds - via the low-inertia small turbo - and strong, top-end power at higher engine speeds when the large turbo is engaged.
The 2.0TTiD engine is available in Vector SE and Aero specification and can be specified with cross wheel drive (XWD), combining diesel power for the first time with Saab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system. All variants are equipped as standard

with Saab’s sophisticated linked H-arm rear suspension system. This system uses double isolated sub-frame mountings for greater ride comfort, and also reduces vibration entering the cabin and further improves roadholding.

    1.6T petrol turbo

This small, highly efficient, 180 hp engine epitomizes Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy. Developing more than 112 hp per litre, it is among the most powerful series production engines in its displacement class.

Such strong power, backed by plentiful torque of 230 Nm from 2,200 rpm to 5,500 rpm (including an ‘overboost’ function), enables 0-62mph acceleration in 9.5 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 36.2 mpg and 179 g/km respectively.

The 1.6T is available in Vector SE specification with front wheel drive and manual transmission.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go

This optional feature for models with automatic transmission enables the driver to select a constant cruising speed and automatically alters the chosen speed to maintain a safe gap to the vehicle on the road ahead. Full distance control is provided from 112 mph down to a complete standstill. ACC offers more relaxing and less stressful driving, particularly in slow-moving, congested traffic conditions. The driver can select one of three distance options.

A radar sensor in the front grille emits a beam to measure the distance to the vehicle in front. If this gap reduces below the required setting, the throttle opening is adjusted or engine braking is applied. Once the appropriate distance is restored, the car will accelerate back up to the pre-set speed. Should heavy braking be required, a visual warning is flashed and an audible sound alerts the driver to take action.

ACC, available later in the model year, requires the fitment of Saab’s head-up display.

Spyker Cars Renews Final Saab Bid - Web Exclusive

ZEEWOLDE, The Netherlands (20 December, 2009) – Following the announcement on Friday that the intended sales terms of Saab Automobile AB between Spyker and General Motors (GM) could not be finalized, the Spyker leadership has submitted a renewed offer in the hopes of securing a future for Saab, its employees and the brand – despite the announcement that the winding down of Saab would begin.

Spyker CEO Victor R. Muller said today that an 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process and that the renewed offer would remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction.
“We have made every effort to resolve the issues that were preventing the conclusion of this matter and we have asked GM and all other involved parties to seriously consider this offer,” said Muller. “We are very confident that our renewed offer will remove the impasse that was standing in the way of an agreement on Friday, and this would still allow us to conclude the deal prior to the expiry of the deadline originally set by GM of December 31st,” said Muller.
“Despite our collective eleventh hour set-back, we are returning to the table with a renewed offer, that addresses every known issue brought to light during the initial negotiations and that has the full backing of the Saab Management. The new offer eliminates the need for an EIB loan approval prior to year end, for example, which will allow the deal to be concluded within GM’s deadline. Our efforts are based on our passion for saving an iconic brand that we would be honoured to shepherd, and the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of loyal Saab employees, suppliers and dealers around the world. Some 1,500,000 Saabs are on the road today and their proud owners would no doubt welcome the survival of this phenomenal brand," he added.

In Spyker’s view, the ownership of Saab by Spyker Cars would add a lot of value to both parties. For Spyker, Saab would bring a strong, global distribution network consisting of no less than 1,100 dealers, state-of-the-art production facilities, a truly dedicated work force and solid engineering, sourcing and research & development capabilities. Likewise, Saab would receive the financial backing required to compete as a competitive global brand, along with an entrepreneurial leadership team sensitive to the uniqueness, heritage and individuality of the Saab brand. Throughout these negotiations, both Spyker and Saab leadership have proven that they share a mutual vision for just such a partnership.

“Our company motto is nulla tenaci invia est via - for the tenacious no road is impassable,” said Muller, “And we intend to remain true to that throughout these negotiations as we bid to secure Saab’s future and revive the company.”

The renewed Spyker offer is valid until 5pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday December 21, 2009.
