Opel Calibra Revival Rendering

For almost a decade, Opel sold the Calibra two-door to buyers looking for a large Coupe that wasn’t Japanese. Between 1989 and 1997, almost 240,000 Calibras were built in Germany and Finland. It even made it to South America, where it was branded as a Chevrolet, and Australia as a Holden.

Sadly, it had to be killed off in the late 90s due to poor sales. In its place, Opel fans got the Astra Bertone and the TwinTop after that, but fans still want the real thing!

Rumors of the Calibra’s return have been circulating for a while now. The Insignia sedan that replaced the Vectra was actually shown as a coupe called the Gran Turismo Coupe Concept back in 2007, but never made it into production.

However, Opel has another architecture that could become the next Calibra. This year, the Cascada convertible will go into production, and it could offer a sloping roof and room enough for passengers in the back.

The Cascada is actually built on the same platform as Astra. It offers a longer wheelbase, but borrows its suspension components from the GTC coupe. If they go this route, the Calibra could be significantly more affordable than if Insignia components were to be used.
