Saab may not be dead just yet. Despite filing for bankruptcy in December, due to GM’s refusal to allow permission for their sale to a new owner, fearing that GM tech may end up in competitors’ hands.
Recently, a Swedish union called IF Metall have sent a letter to US president Barack Obama in which they are requesting his help with saving Saab and the livelihoods of its more than 4,500 (now ex-) workers. The letter which was posted on SverigesRadio asks Obama to tell GM to allow the sale of Saab to a new owner, along with some of their more basic technologies. The letter also stated that Saab would never pose a threat to GM, were it to restart production on its own and with a new owner, as it is a niche brand and only appeals to certain people (architects and interior decorators mostly).
No official reply from GM or Barack Obama have been given so far, though we’re really hoping that this final effort to save Saab succeeds as they are a brand that deserves to carry on thanks to their ‘different’ (in a good way) philosophy to making cars.
