Volkswagen has recently released the Polo R WRC,
the hottest version of its supermini that celebrates the company's WRC
offensive. One may think that since the model, a limited-edition one,
has just arrived, there's nothing new we can expect from VW on this
topic, but now there's a new rumors that comes to contradict such
expectations.
Since the Polo R WRC was launched so early in the three-year Volkswagen WRC schedule, the carmaker could be planning additional versions of the car to keep the public's interest at a high level.
Thus, we could see the Polo R receive four-wheel drive in the future. The Polo is underpinned by the same PQ25 platform as the Audi A1. The latter already has a four-wheel drive incarnation, the A1 quattro, so an AWD Polo R would certainly be possible from the technical point of view.
“There could be some customer interest, so I think four-wheel drive could be great for some countries. There are no plans [for now], but I could imagine it,” Head of VW R&D, Ulrich Hackenberg, said.
