Nissan failed to reach the 10,000 deliveries mark, with the Leaf
EV, even by the end of 2012, and the total number of examples sold last
year stopped just short, at 9,819. They almost had it, and if their
December sales figure of 1,489 would have been slightly higher, they
would have succeeded.
However, they were well-aware of the fact that sales had been stagnating
around the 1,500 units per month mark for about three months. The Chevy
Volt range-extender hybrid ended up selling a total of 23,461
throughout the whole of 2012, which represents a massive improvement
over the 2011 sales figure of just 7,671 units.
The end result for the Volt came courtesy of improved sales in December, which climbed to 2,633 units, following the November slump, when it was almost outsold by the Nissan Leaf.
This year, sales will grow steadily, for both cars, according to those in the know, with the Leaf getting an extra boost, as it is set to enter local production, in the US, at the Smyrna plant, in Tennessee, later this year.
