Last month, German luxury automaker revealed the facelift for the biggest car they make, the 7-Series that signaled a new and much appreciated design change for the automaker. This brought about the introduction of the new tri-turbo diesel engine to the range and a number of other upgrades.
BMW reportedly wants a diesel 7-Series in America, but not the tri-turbo which would not be viable given the number of years the 7er has left. Instead, either the 735d or 740d will be introduced next year in the US.
BimmerPost suggests this raises hopes for the introduction of the 3-Series and 5-Series models with the same engine. You see, making a diesel comply with strict US emissions laws which aren’t kind to the way diesel engines starts, would be a bit too expensive to only one model.
When asked about their diesel ambitions, BMW North America told Bimmerpost that "our last outgoing model [e90] was very successful with the diesel so we’re thinking about it."
Currently, the straight-six engine in a 535d puts out 313 horsepower (230 kW) and 630 Nm of torque from just 1,500 rpm. However, America likes to differentiate economy from performance, so the 530d with 255hp (258PS) and 560Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque is also a possibility.
