As if there weren’t enough variants of the Golf and cars based on its platform, Volkswagen are apparently going to make an all-terrain crossover Golf. According to Autocar, its styling and philosophy will be in line with the recently-revealed Passat Alltrack, so it’s probably also going to borrow the “Alltrack” denomination.
The car will most definitely feature VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system as standard, on all but the most basic and stripped out version in the range. We know it’s also going to be front-wheel drive, but if one would want to buy a front-wheel drive Golf, they should go right ahead and buy a Golf. The Alltrack will probably preview the MK VII Golf, as it will be one of the first cars to use VW’s new MQB platform, currently only used in the Audi A3.
Apparently, the key to the Golf Alltrack will be the US market, where the nex-gen Tiguan (to be launched some time in 2014) will grow and possibly get an extra row of seats, leaving room in the range for the Golf crossover.
