Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and Ducati have suspended production at their plants in the wake of the latest earthquake in Italy.
An initial 5.8-magnitude quake in the Modena province overnight was followed by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock. All four of the Italian makers’ plants are located in the region, with Maserati based in the city of Modena, while Ferrari is 18km southwest at Maranello, and Lamborghini is 20km east in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The Ducati plant on the outskirts of the city of Bologna also closed down for the day.
Automotive News reports there was no damage at any of the plants, but about 5000 workers were affected by the closures.
Ducati’s twitter account (@DucatiMotor) states: “Ducati today is closed due to the earthquake. People are ok, we are verifing (sic) the factory”, and “We feel very close to all the families and people that live near here for this difficult moment.”
A message was posted on Ferrari’s official twitter account @InsideFerrari: “After the earthquake, working activity has been suspended for today. All the workers and employees have been allowed to join their families.”
Ferrari formula one driver Fernando Alonso (@alo_oficial) also tweeted about the news.
“After the earthquake, the team has decided to stop the activities at the factory. We are all going back to home...” Alonso wrote.
Lamborghini (@lamborghini) posted several tweets on the situation, starting with: “5.9 #earthquake in the region, here in Sant'Agata everything looks fine and engineers are checking the #lamborghini factory and the building”; before and update: “We are checking that everything is fine and we'll re-start the production as soon as possible”.
Production is set to resume at all four plants tomorrow.
The earthquake claimed the lives of at least 10 people, while another quake earlier this month near the town of Finale Emilia killed seven others.
