Were we to photoshop in an extra pair of doors to it, you’d never know it’s a new BMW. But it is, the new 1-Series 3-door hatchback is here. With exactly the same dimension as the 5-door version, there’s very little to distinguish the two, the only noticeable (and welcome) addition being the frameless doors.
The other big news lies under the bonnet, with the M135i getting a new 3-liter turbocharged engine with 320hp, which is capable of propelling the car from 0-100 kmh (0-62mph) in 5.1 seconds. With this top-of-the-range engine, BMW have also introduced an entry level model, in the form of the 114i, which despite its denomination does not get a 1.4-liter engine, but a 1.6-liter unit with turbocharging and 101 hp.
With the new 1-Series already splitting opinions on its styling, the removal of two of its doors doesn’t really help it in this aspect, so we’ll have to wait for BMW to introduce the Coupe model for that extra bit of impact.
