Nothing seems to stand in the way of BMW’s expansion into China. After joining forces with Brilliance Automotive 2003 and beginning production of BMW-badged cars in China in 2004.
On May 24th, BMW opened a new factory in the Tiexi district of the city of Shenyang. With investments of €500- ($628-) million, with the opening of the new factory, BMW aim to increase their China production to 400,000 in the near future, a realistic figure which is backed up by the relentless desire to make money in China.
According to the Chairman of the Brilliance Group, “the development of this new plant is a result of the success of BMW Brilliance and the strong cooperation between shareholders,” so apparently, everybody is confident, as the new plant has already started producing the X1 and the all-new 3-Series will soon follow, with the Dadong plant (also located in Shenyang) to concentrate on producing the long wheelbase 5-Series, at a rate of 100,000 units per year.
An aspect which sets the new plant apart, are its green credentials, as it uses sunlight, wind and optimal positioning for the windows to reduce its electricity bills by 25% and its heating bills by 50%, while reducing overall CO2 emissions by 32%.
