What's the news?
While European buyers have been salivating at the thought of the recently announced M135i the American market has not yet received the second-generation car on which it is based. As a run-out for the original 1 Series BMW of America has lumped the 320hp turbocharged straight-six engine from the M135i into the body of the Coupé and Convertible models to create the performance oriented 135is.
Exterior
The 135is models are offered with unique 18-inch alloy wheels, a liberal smattering of badges and a more aggressive look by virtue of the M Sport styling package. The kidney grille and mirror caps are also painted in high-gloss black paint.
Interior
Interior highlights include stainless steel pedals, special interior badges and optional black leather seats with blue stitching for the standard sport seats.
Mechanicals
The performance-orientated 135is models are powered by the latest turbocharged straight-six petrol engine that will be found under the bonnet of the all-new M135i model. Peak power is 320hp (at 5,800rpm) and maximum torque of 450Nm is produced between 1,300- and 4,500rpm, representing rises of 20hp and 23Nm over the standard 135i model. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but buyers can opt for a seven-speed automatic. Despite the power hike BMW claims the 135is will be as efficient as the standard model.
Data
The 135is Coupé and Convertible are available to order now with customer deliveries expected in the autumn. These models are for the US market only.
