All automakers have problems with their naming strategies right now! BWM will make the 3-Series coupe and convertible into a 4-Series, while all Mercedes SUVs will start with “G”. There are also some cars that have to be renamed for the Chinese market, where you can’t really use numbers to great effect.
Peugeot hopes it’s found the solution with their new naming system. Some of you might have already noticed that the new compact sedan from the French carmaker is actually called the 301, even though it’s basically successor to the 308. This is partly because the next number in the scheme was a bucket of bolts (the 309).
However, it’s also because Peugeot has developed a naming system under which all cars will start with either '1' or '8'.
The 301 and other cars that end in 1 will be budget-minded, and the ‘8’ models are to be more upmarket.
All the current cars will also be renamed soon under the new system, more specifically the 107 will become the 108.
