It turns out that the
only (so far) Mercedes-Benz model created specifically as an AMG, the
SLS coupe with gullwing doors, was designed from day one to have either a
hard or a soft top. The ’12 SLS Roadster makes its North American debut
this fall. If anyone took a look at the tin-top car and thought having
hinges in the roof would probably affect its center of gravity, and not
in a good way, then this iteration might well be the preferred choice.
Extra compensatory bracing has made it only 88 pounds heavier than the
coupe and it will still hit a top speed of 187 mph. The triple-layer
fabric/magnesium/aluminum/steel roof can be opened or closed on the fly
at speeds of up to 31 mph. Creature comforts include a Bang &
Olufsen audio system and Benz’s Airscarf feature that sends warm air
wafting around the occupants’ necks.
