It’s like how
Christmas follows Thanksgiving. Mercedes-Benz brings out a new car and
then an AMG version comes soon after. The latest toy for grown-up
gearheads is the ’12 CLS63 AMG the new generation of Benz’s seductively
swoopy sedan. Despite the numbers on the trunk lid (which might suggest
the use of AMG’s 507hp 6.3-liter powerplant), under the hood is a
5.5-liter V8 with a couple of turbos. A seven-speed auto transmission
sends power to the rear wheels. By opting for the AMG Performance
Package, output is 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Without said package,
it’s still a decent 518 hp and 516 lb-ft, resulting in a 0-60 time of
4.4 seconds; the more muscular version shaves off one tenth. Although
somewhat academic in the real world, top speeds are 155 mph and 186 mph,
both limited electronically. The good folks of Baden-Wrttenberg claim a
33 percent hike in fuel efficiency over the outgoing range-topper,
quoting 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. A computer-controlled suspension
offers Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings, and the electronics
stability program also has three levels of intervention. Summer 2011 is
the closest we have to a release date right now, with only the outgoing
model’s MSRP of $99,050 as something to aim for.
