Subaru to Increase US Production Capacity by 30% by 2016

Officials from Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, have announced that they plan on increasing the Japanese automaker’s US production capacity by 30%, by the year 2016. The Indiana plant, which is Subaru’s only one outside Japan, builds 170,000 units per year, alongside an additional 100,000 Toyota Camrys.

The increase in capacity comes courtesy of excellent US demand, as Subaru managed to sell an impressive 330,000 cars Stateside, in 2011, and the numbers for 2012 will be higher still. However, half of those cars were shipped over from Japan, where they are built at Subaru’s main plant, located in the Gunma district, which has a very impressive production capacity of nearly 750,000 vehicles annually.

Subaru was pondering whether or not to build a new plant in northern Mexico, but by boosting the capacity of the plant they already have access to, they have partially covered the need for a new factory, for a much smaller total investment figure.
