In the wake of the ‘Japan problem’, non-Japanese brands
experienced substantial increase in sales, as Chinese buyers began
boycotting Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi models for political
reasons. GM also recorded excellent growth in 2012, and their sales in
China rose by an impressive 14.7% last year.
They sold a total of 2.85 million vehicles last year, and these do not include any of the imported models, as GM has not released any data regarding them, yet. Of the total number of locally-produced vehicles, 1.39 million came from SAIC Motor, which recorded a growth figure of 13.1%, while Wuling Motors sold 12% more vehicles than they did in 2011 - 1.46 million in total.
We are still waiting on the complete December numbers, from China, in order to get the full picture, but since GM sold 2.55 million units in the last month of 2011, the numbers for 2012 will be proportionally higher.
Now, the American giant is in a tight race with Volkswagen, to see which manufacturer can sell the most cars in 2013. GM is currently first, as VW lost the pole in 2004. However, this year, the Wolfsburg automaker is expected to regain the crown, as they will be introducing a total of 8 new and/or revamped models.
