The XK had been Jaguar’s sporty GT car for many years now (old
generation included), and it was the British brand’s only offering of
the kind. However, now, with the the smaller F-Type slotting in
underneath it in the Jag range, the next XK can take on a different
role, and move further upmarket.
According to Jaguar’s design director, Ian Callum, they are currently “going through a lot of discussion” on what shape the next XK will take, yet he added that the introduction of the F-Type will “allow the car to become a bit more special than a GT.”
He goes on to say that “It could grow into the luxury market, and grow in size [ . . . ] Whether it stays the same as a two-plus-two or becomes a two-plus-more-than-two has not been committed to yet.”
Jaguar designers and engineers now have a lot more freedom to set the XK apart from the F-Type, which is a dedicated sports car, yet while the direction they will take is not yet clear, it is certain that it will be a very different car to what we have now.
