The RS 5 is coming, the RS 5 is coming, the RS 5 is coming. The idea of an ultimate version of this comely coupe has been taunting enthusiasts since the A5 first launched in 2007. Then Audi had a show vehicle for 2010’s Geneva bash and now a street-going iteration goes on sale about the same time as this magazine reaches the shelves, designated as a 2013 model. Filling out the engine bay is a 4.2-liter V8 that sends 450 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed S-tronic transmission. That’s the one with the dual-clutch/paddle shifter arrangement. Torque split is usually 40:60, but is variable enough to send 70 percent to the front or 85 percent to the rear wheels. The electronic stability control can be turned off completely for further shenanigans. A rear wing pops up automatically at 75 mph, dropping at 50 mph. Options include 20-inch wheels and carbon-ceramic brake discs. No zero-to-60 mph time has been quoted yet, but top speed is 174 mph.
