First, the bad
news: only 25 examples of the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible will be sold
in the United States, each one costing $138,000. Here’s some worse
news: the 2012 model year coupe version of this supercharged, 5.0-liter
V8-engined grand tourer has already sold out. So chances are slim that
we’ll know anyone who will be able to luxuriate in 550 hp and 502 lb-ft
torque, while whisking themselves from zero to 60 mph in just 4.2
seconds and watching the cops become an ever-smaller fleck of blue on
the way to a top speed of 186 mph. This is the fastest and most powerful
open-top car Jaguar has ever produced. Yes, convertibles normally come
with the handicap of body flex, but this mainly aluminum-bodied machine
is so rigid that Mike Cross, Jaguar’s legendary chief engineer, said the
suspension settings in the coupe version (lower and firmer than the
usual XK) were imported straight over to this model without any further
adjustment. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be part of the one percent?
