2005 BMW M5

The Fourth Generation Of The Ultimate Driving Machine It has been 20 years since the launch of the first BMW M5 and 4 years since the last model was introduced; it's about time for a new one. The all-new 2005 M5 features the first high-revving engine in a production sedan. The new V10, featuring double VANOS variable valve timing, produces 507 bhp and 383 lb-ft of torque (European spec), and redlines at 8250 rpm. From a dead stop, 60 mph is reached in well under 5 sec. The top speed is, sadly, electronically limited to 155 mph.
The 5.0-liter V10's power is transmitted through a seven-speed SMG gearbox with Drivelogic. Compared to the previous SMG, the latest version's gear changes are 20% faster. Drivelogic's 11 program options enables the SMG's shift characteristics to be tailored to the driving situation and mood. Six of these programs can be selected in the SMG mode (S mode) and adjust shifting speed and style. In Drive (D mode), the transmission shifts automatically, depending on which of the five programs is selected, along with the driving conditions, road speed and throttle activity.
It wouldn't be an M5 without handling characteristics to match performance, thus the new sport sedan has more than just a "tuned" 5 Series setup. The sport-engineered aluminum suspension is mated to 19-in. wheels with performance tires and features the Variable M differential lock, which ensures that power gets to the drive wheel with the most traction even in extreme driving situations.
The Dynamic Stability Control system has also been designed to suit the M5's performance, offering two driving dynamics programs (actually three if you count turning it off): Normal and M Dynamic Mode for a more enthusiastic driving style. There are also three program modes for the Electronic Damping Control system (comfort, normal, sport), which constantly adjusts the suspension to suit the driving conditions. Lastly, generously sized high-performance brakes with perforated compound brake discs bring the new M5 to a stop from 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 120 ft and from 124 mph (200 km/h) in just under 460 ft.
For those in the know, the modified front spoiler and rear apron are instant giveaways to the M5's hidden strengths. Ditto the modified side sills and prominent wheel arches. The new M5 also sports more aerodynamic exterior mirrors, four tailpipes and exclusive wheels. And, similar to the latest M3, the M5 features exclusive gills incorporated into the front fenders.
On the inside, the exclusive leather interior features sports seats. Other styling touches, from the instrument cluster to the center console and the steering wheel are all unique to the M5. Even the optional heads-up display is M-specific.
The all-new BMW M5 is due to reach North American shores in the fall of 2005.
